Gallo took its

on-trade over-ice serve for rosť wine into the take-home market, with special packs containing bottles of White Grenache or White Zinfandel, a glass and an ice tray. Self-seal ice cube bags were also given away on bottles in a £2.5 million push for the pink wines. A White Grenache wine box in the shape of a handbag was sold through Tesco, and Gallo Family Vineyards had a new best mate in the form of Gordon Ramsay and sponsorship of his F-Word TV programme. A Pinot Grigio was added to the Family Vineyards range.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
