Still wine sparkles in English awards

11 July, 2008

A still white wine has won the English & Welsh Wine of the Year competition for the first time in nearly a decade.

Three Choirs Estate Reserve Siegerrebe 2006 won the Gore-Brown Trophy to break the stranglehold of sparkling wines on the prize.

It was the first still winner since 1999.

Martin Fowke of Three Choirs was named Winemaker of the Year, while the Waitrose Rosé Trophy was awarded to Denbies Estate Rose

Hill 2007.

Best sparkling wine was Camel Valley Cornwall White Pinot 2005.

The awards will be presented on July 22 at the House of Lords.
