Ehrmanns bails Los Robles

08 August, 2008

Chilean Fairtrade winery Los Robles has been thrown a lifeline by its UK agent Ehrmanns after experiencing financial problems.

In a statement to OLN, Ehrmanns said: "We understand there has been

speculation in the UK about Los Robles, and would like to make it clear that although it has been

hit by the recent currency travails in Chile, it is not in administration."

The importer said it would be "working

with Los Robles to consider a number of ways to restructure the business" .

A series of support measures have been put in a place for customers of Los Robles in the UK. These include moving bottling to the UK in an effort to "ensure continuity of supply until the end of 2008 when it is expected that these issues will be resolved", Ehrmanns added.

The

wine co-operative was set up in 1939 to help rebuild the local community in Curico after more than 10,000 people were killed by an earthquake. In 2004 it became the first South American winery to be certified Fairtrade .

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
