Adnams puts new store plans on hold

08 August, 2008

Adnams' Cellar & Kitchen retail venture has put its expansion plans on hold this year to focus on the shops it has already opened.

The Suffolk brewer, pub and hotel operator, and wine merchant still expects to open 30 stores by 2012, but has cancelled plans to open three more shops at earmarked sites in Oxfordshire, the Cotswolds and on the south coast this year.

Instead it will focus on the 10 shops already in its estate, including its first London area outlet, which opened in Richmond this spring, and a flagship store due to open in Southwold in November.

Retail development manager Caroline Fox said: "It is to do with the economic climate, but it is also about what we need to do with regard to setting up our new shops. It is going to be a tough year , so it is important that we concentrate on what we are doing with our existing stores. For example, we've just opened one in Richmond, and will concentrate on that rather than spreading ourselves far and wide this year."

She added: "We will still open 30 stores by 2012 - the idea is to ramp up the rate of openings at a later date rather than this year."

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
