Diamond River to flow into UK

Durham-based Lanchester Wine Cellars has launched a range of South African wines made in conjunction with Cape Diamond Vineyards in Lutzville.

The Diamond River line-up consists of a Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. A Sauvignon Blanc will be added from the 2008 vintage later in the year.

Lanchester managing director Tony Cleary said: "We have been working for some time now to develop a range of affordable, approachable, off-dry wine styles that appeal to both seasoned wine drinkers and newcomers .

" Soon we will be bottling the Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon in a 18.7cl bottle

for the UK, Irish and European markets."

Wines come in a heavyweight bottle with a Stelcap closure.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
