Jacquart changes off-trade strategy

22 August, 2008

Champagne Jacquart has made some alterations to its distribution arrangements in the UK, with separate roles for Paragon Vintners and PLB Wines.

From September, Paragon will handle distribution in the independent and multiple specialist sectors, as well as looking after cash and carries and the on-trade.

PLB, with whom Jacquart has worked since 2004, will continue to distribute the Champagne in the multiple grocery sector.

Paragon will focus on Jacquart’s Mosaïque range, while PLB will handle the Tradition range. The Prestige, Special Cuvées and Vintage products will be available through both distributors.

Jacquart managing director Jean-Marc Pottiez said: “The UK is one of our best performing export markets, now accounting for 23% of total exports, and PLB is helping us make fantastic progress in the leading UK supermarkets.

“We feel there is great potential in the on-trade, independent retailer and off-licence sectors. Paragon’s experience and know-how will certainly enable us to take full advantage of this. I am delighted and excited by the prospect of working with Paragon and PLB, two of the country’s best operators.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
