Mumm looks at lighter glass

Champagne producers are experimenting with lighter bottles which could shave 65g off the usual 900g weight of the packaging.

Mumm has produced 2.5 million 835g bottles which it is now ageing in its cellars for two and a half years. Assuming the bottles do not explode, they will hit the marketplace in 2011.

The trial will require the blessing of the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne, which will decide if the lightweight bottles should be recommended to its members.

Environmental and economic concerns have already prompted beer and still wine producers to introduce lightweight glass. Champagne producers face a particular challenge as their products are bottled containing four times the pressure of the tyres on a double-decker bus.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
