McGuigan uses its Grey matter

Australian wine producer McGuigan has added Grey Label to its range, a brand designed specifically for the UK market.

The Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Shiraz wines have been sourced from specially

selected vineyards across

South

East Australia, with 25% premium, dry-grown fruit to add complexity .

The 2007 Chardonnay is matured in lightly toasted oak for three months

and the 2008 vintage Sauvignon is made from night-harvested fruit.

The wines have an rrp of £6.99 and are being listed by Tesco, Sainsbury's, Co-op and Majestic from October.

Paul Schaafsma, European general manager of parent company Australian Vintage, said: "The wines have been developed in response to demands

for floral whites and elegant, plummy reds."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
