NZ independents shortlist revealed

Five wine merchants will find out

next month which has won a buying trip for two to New Zealand as winner of the New Zealand Independent Wine Merchant Awards for 2008.

The

winner will be chosen from

finalists

including: Adnams Cellar & Kitchen in Southwold, Suffolk; Amps Fine

Wines of Oundle, Cambs; Flagship Wines of St Albans, Herts; John Scott & Miller of Kirkwall, Orkney; and Noble Green Wines, of Hampton Hill, Middx.

The four who miss out on the main prize will all win a weekend for two in London.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
