Space-age answer to under-age ID

Age verification software that

scans and checks customers' ID has been launched by London-based Idscan Biometrics.

AgeSafe is aimed at retailers, pubs and petrol stations and works on any Windows-based PC

to read

and verif y 230 forms of ID, including driving licences, the Citizen Card and 164

types of passport.

Managing director Tamlyn Thompson said: "AgeSafe is designed to both stop teenagers buying these products and also protect retailers' livelihoods. It's cost-effective, simple and reliable."

Users can also opt to have the software upgraded so it scans customers' fingerprints and corresponds that data with their original ID.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
