The 2009 Drinks Retailing Awards are now open

and accepting entries from companies and individuals who are setting the pace in the UK off-trade. The deadline is Sept 26.

The awards, organised by Off Licence News, are recognised as the most professionally judged in the industry.

Entrants from multiple retailers are

assessed by a

judging academy drawn from experts

in the industry, while independent categories are judged in a

number of

sessions.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
