Marlborough winery Mount Riley has appointed a new winemaker, Matt Murphy (pictured, left, with winery owner John Buchanan and sales & marketing director Amy Buchanan). Murphy's past roles have included working for Esk Valley and Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay.

Champagne producers are experimenting with lighter bottles which could shave 65g off the usual 900g weight of the packaging. Mumm has produced 2.5 million 835g bottles which it is now ageing in its cellars for two and a half years.

Champagne Jacquart has appointed Paragon Vintners to handle

distribution to independent and multiple specialist retailers , while PLB continues to supply its wines to supermarkets.

Freixenet has launched a wine range created by fashion designer Christian Audigier. The LA-based designer teamed up with Montpeyroux Estates in southern France to create a range of wines that are "striking and fun" with bottle designs inspired by Audigier's "rock 'n' roll street style and Hollywood glam". The wines already count Madonna and Snoop Dogg among their customers, according to Freixenet.

Jeroboam s' autumn press tasting will be themed on "wines with provenance" - wines with a real sense of place; complex blends, and wines with less than 13% abv. The tasting takes place at Milroy's of Soho on Oct 22-23.

The Institute of Masters of Wine has called for second-year students to apply for the Yalumba Scholarship. The winning scholar gets a trip to Melbourne and a visit to the Yalumba winery in Angaston, worth up to 3,000.
