Vodkat firm vows to fight passing off claims

08 September, 2008

Intercontinental Brands says it will fight allegations by Diageo that it is passing off its Vodkat speciality spirits as vodka.

Joint managing director Paul Burton said: “We don’t want to comment much because we don’t want to prejudice our case if it becomes a full-blown court case.

“But we are defending it robustly.

“It is a drink containing vodka, just as there are a lot of other drinks containing vodka, and it’s clearly labelled on the front as 22% abv and described as a classic schnapps drink”.

Diageo confirmed that it has “commenced proceedings against the makers of Vodkat for passing off and breach of regulations on the definition, description, presentation, labelling and the protection of geographical indications of spirit drinks”.

A statement for the company added: “It is inappropriate to comment further on pending legal proceedings.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
