Pledge to defend Vodkat's honour

19 September, 2008

Intercontinental Brands says it will

fight allegations by Diageo that it is passing off its Vodkat speciality spirit

as vodka.

Joint managing director Paul Burton said: "We don't want to comment much because we don't want to prejudice our case if it becomes a full-blown court case.

"But we are defending it robustly.

It is a drink containing vodka, just as there are a lot of other drinks containing vodka, and it's clearly labelled on the front as 22% abv and described as a classic schnapps drink."

Diageo confirmed that it has "commenced proceedings against the makers of Vodkat for passing off and breach of regulations on the definition, description, presentation, labelling and

protection of geographical indications of spirit drinks".

A statement for the company added: "It is inappropriate to comment further on pending legal proceedings."

Vodkat is sold at well below the European minimum

37% abv for pure vodka.

I B launched the brand in 2006 as a "premium vodka blend spirit mix" and has achieved spectacular success , with sales up 66%

in the year to Aug 9.

Agreeing to disagree

Disagreeing about wine is a fact of wine-trade life, like drugs in sport or corruption in politics. Because taste is entirely subjective, debates about our personal preferences are as inevitable as they are interminable. Indeed, these long-winded, wine-fuelled arguments are precisely what make our jobs so much fun.
