Asda rewards beer winners with listings

Asda is offering brewers a 12-week listing in its stores as prizes in its beer competition.

The supermarket is seeking out the best new beers and ciders from micro, regional and national breweries in a competition which runs across six categories: Scottish ale; northern English ale; southern English ale; lager; cider; and speciality beer.

Beer buyer Jill Wilson said: “We are continually looking at trends and introducing new products.

“We are passionate about putting the highest quality products on our shelves. That’s the inspiration behind the competition – allowing breweries, from the smallest to the largest, to give consumers a chance to sample new, quality tastes.”

One winner will be chosen from each category based on taste, packaging sustainability, design stand-out and labelling. All six winners will get a 12-week listing from January 2009, with a potential extended guest listing if their product proves popular with customers.

The competition winners will be chosen by panel of expert judges. There is no limit to the number of entries but products must be new to Asda and have a maximum abv of 6.5%.

The closing date for entries is Oct 31.

The limitations of Instawines

Picture the scene. You put your key in the keyhole, shove the door with your shoulder, drop your bags and look down. There, beaming up at you, is some relative or friend’s smug postcard with sandy beaches, Piña Coladas and palm trees (or, these days, an in nity pool and a detox smoothie) with a literal or metaphorical “wish you were here” written large.
