BII chief executive John McNamara will

Asda seeks out prize brews

Asda is offering brewers a 12-week listing in its stores as prizes in its beer competition. The supermarket is seeking out the best new beers and ciders from micro, regional and national breweries. They will be judged on taste, packaging sustainability and design.

Sainsbury's lists multiple ciders

Cider producer Thatchers is celebrating new and extended listings for its brands with Sainsbury's. Old Rascal is being taken

on a national basis, and

Thatchers Pear and Gold will be featured in some stores. The number of branches selling

Thatchers' Katy and Vintage brands will be doubled. Tesco is also taking on Old Rascal , an oak-aged cider made from Dabinett and Redstreak cider apples.

Retirement for Stevens

Stevens Garnier founder Alastair Stevens has retired after 32 years with the business.

He will retain his shareholding and remain as non -executive chairman.

Red Stripe is official Q beer

Red Stripe will be the official beer of the Q Awards 2008. The sponsorship includes coverage for the brand in Q magazine, and

on radio and the internet before and after the awards. Red Stripe is also sponsoring the Best New Act category at the awards on Oct 6.

Blush gains Champagne gong

Sophie Rudge, owner of corporate wine consultancy Blush, has won the UK leg of the Champagne Ambassador's Award.

Contestants were judged on their knowledge, communication skills and ability to bring the subject

to life. Rudge, who has just completed the first year of the Master of Wine programme, will go on to compete against national finalists from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland.

Paskins climbs the B-M ranks

Bacardi-Martini UK has named David Paskins as senior brand manager. He joins from his previous role as director of drinks industry consultancy the Gorgeous Group, where he worked directly on Bacardi's Build Belief programme for 18 months. Marketing director Liam Newton said: "His appointment is very much a natural progression that will allow us to continue to develop relevant and highly engaging activity on our brands."

What to expect at Christmas

The arrival of October means that we’re now officially in Nielsen’s Christmas trading period. Manufacturers and retailers alike have until December 30 to optimise their sales plans and activate them in-store in order to win at Christmas.
