Is there hope beyond Rioja?

03 October, 2008

Q Is Rioja still the main focus for Spain in the UK market or have the emerging regions started to challenge its supremacy?

A According to our friends at Wines from Rioja, it continues to be the leading wine region from Spain, with sales

accounting for 35% of Spanish wine value.

"Rioja sales have grown by 26% in volume since 2006, with brands accounting for 84% of the region's total sales," they add. "Rioja enjoys a relatively high average bottle price of £5.29, and the £4-£6 sector is seeing the fastest growth." The number one Rioja brand in the UK is Campo Viejo.

New laws have been passed to allow the planting in the region of previously banned indigenous and international white grapes, such as Sauvignon Blanc, so there's the possibility of white Rioja broadening its horizons in the not too distant future.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
