If you could have three wishes to improve your working day, what would they be?

Free refills in Starbucks; duty-free Mondays

and a round of golf at Loch Lomond every Friday.

When you're not working how do

you seek your thrills?

Riding zip-lines with Hannah and Tom, my kids.

If you had an extra hour in

the working day what would

you do with it?

Have a proper lunch break, rather than

a naff butty at my desk.

What one thing is guaranteed to make your blood boil?

Couriers and short deliveries.

What would you recommend to a customer wanting to splash out?

Fabulous value from Spain at the top end - Tres Picos Garnacha 2006 .

What's the most unusual thing that has happened to you in your shop?

A couple of Emmerdale Farm stars popping in and filling their car boots.

Tell us something about yourself

that would surprise your friends?

I once had dinner with golfer Miguel-Angel Jim énez in Paternina's cellars.

How do you deal with irritating customers?

Suggest they may find more appropriate wines in Threshers.

What are the most underrated and overrated wines in the UK market?

Argentinian Malbec s are starting to get the credit they deserve - while Bordeaux at sub -£15 is still hard work in my mind.

Your shop is burning down, what three things do you grab before you leg it out the door?

My lap top,

photos and my last few bottles of Ch âteau Cos D'Estournel.

Which other drinks retailers do you most admire?

Majestic, for

defining the merchants' market in a repeatable, profitable way.

In a nutshell, my philosophy is ...

Try not to take life too seriously, and drink only good wine.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
