Chile has more bite

31 October, 2008

Chilean producer Viñedos Corpora Family Estates has upped its production of Pinot Noir and Malbec with a

$15 million vineyard investment plan.

The acquisition of Bodega Universo Austral in Neuquén and vineyards in the province of Río Negro, Patagonia, means VC adds two new brands to its portfolio - Calafate (rrp £6.99) and Chaltén (rrp £7.99-8.99). The ranges will include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Malbec.

Chief executive Jorge Goles said: "Since VC is the first Chilean enterprise to invest in the region, it intends to position itself as a strong leader of fine wine production in cool-climate terroir, in the southernmost region of the world."

Goles predicts the investment means VC will become "the main Chilean exporter of Gran Reserva Pinot Noir and Malbec within the next five years".

The limitations of Instawines

Picture the scene. You put your key in the keyhole, shove the door with your shoulder, drop your bags and look down. There, beaming up at you, is some relative or friend’s smug postcard with sandy beaches, Piña Coladas and palm trees (or, these days, an in nity pool and a detox smoothie) with a literal or metaphorical “wish you were here” written large.
