Beer range to mark Corrie's 50th

ITV is considering launching a range of Newton & Ridley beers to mark the 50th anniversary of Coronation Street.

The plan was part of a package of development ideas presented by Gustavo Antonioni, the commercial brand development director for ITV Global Entertainment, to a conference of over 200 brand licensing industry representatives.

An ITV spokesman said: "They are still development ideas and we haven't entered into any licensing partnerships yet.

"But they are quite likely because they are very serious ideas being put forward."

Beers would be branded with the name of the brewery that owns the soap's

Rovers Return pub.

Other product spin-offs being proposed include restaurants, tea

sets and a range of underwear named after the show's fictional lingerie manufacturer Underworld.

Products could hit the market next year ahead of the 50th birthday celebrations in 2010.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
