Consumers spending less on wine – survey

A poll by Wine Intelligence for the Wine & Spirit Trade Association shows consumers are reining in their spending on wine.

The survey of 1,000 regular wine drinkers highlighted a shift away from wines in the £5-6 bracket and an increase in sales below £5. Sales between £5 and £6 were down 22% over the past three months and the typical off-trade spend for everyday wines fell by 12p.Wines for special occasions are down by between 20p and 30p a bottle.

Some 72% of drinkers rate promotions as the single biggest when deciding which wine to buy, putting it ahead of grape for the first time. WSTA chief executive Jeremy Beadles said: “The survey reinforces out view that continuing steps to push alcohol prices up using tax as a blunt weapon are wholly inappropriate."

“Equally the survey suggests the trade may have things to learn about spending patterns in the off-trade, with brands more readily accepted than previously thought.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
