Independents gear up for SITT

Some 43 exhibitors will be showcasing their wines at the fourth Specialist Importers Trade Tastings. The events, in Manchester (Feb 23) and London (Feb 25), give independents the chance to taste a range of wines, many of which are unavailable to multiples. OLN will be hosting a seminar aimed at the future of independents at the event , which will be held at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and at the Great Halls, Vinopolis, London . Supermarkets in Bailey's war

Bailey's is the subject of a fierce price war as the supermarkets gear up for Christmas. Tesco has led the charge by cutting the price of a 70cl bottle to £7 and advertising the deal on TV. Somerfield is selling the same size bottle for £9.49, Asda is running a two-for-£20 deal and Waitrose has dropped the price to £10.99.

Portman in responsible push

The Portman Group is launching a press campaign encouraging consumers to complain about social responsibility issues around alcohol, in a bid to champion self-regulation in the drinks trade. The ads aim to highlight its role in encouraging and challenging drinks producers to promote

Lifting the spirits

I were to sum up alcohol sales over Christmas 2017 in one word, it would be “gin”. At Nielsen, we define the Christmas period as the 12 weeks to December 30 and in that time gin sales were £199.4 million, which means they increased by £55.4 million compared with Christmas 2016.
