Champagne Georges Gardet, a fourth-generation Champagne house in Chigny-les-Roses, has appointed Cachet Wine as its England and Wales agent, after its previous agent, Michael Peace, died earlier this year. Gardet produces eight Champagnes, including two fully oak-aged wines, two vintages and two rosés.

Adrian Bridge, managing director of the Fladgate Partnership, is training to scale Antarctica's highest mountain, Vinson Massif, to raise cash for Portuguese charity Nariz Vermelho, which means red nose, and supports seriously ill children. Bridge's expedition

is scheduled to last three weeks .

Direct Wine Shipments and McAlindon Wines have added northern Italian wine estate Paitin to their portfolios. Paitin is one of the oldest Barbaresco estates in Piedmont's Neive area, and has been making wine since the 18th century. Its wines range from £11.99 to £44.99.

Great Western Wine has released its Christmas gift brochure, including single and multiple bottle collections of wines ideal

as presents . Examples are a pink Champagne and chocolate gift pack and a Champagne case celebrating the company's 25th year.

South Africa's Biodiversity & Wine Initiative has named Somerset West-based Lourensford Wines as one of its champions. There are 13 BWI wine producer champions, who are recognised for their work conserving the Cape's endangered flora and fauna.

The limitations of Instawines

Picture the scene. You put your key in the keyhole, shove the door with your shoulder, drop your bags and look down. There, beaming up at you, is some relative or friend’s smug postcard with sandy beaches, Piña Coladas and palm trees (or, these days, an in nity pool and a detox smoothie) with a literal or metaphorical “wish you were here” written large.
