United Schnapps up Godfrey's

14 November, 2008

United Brands has added Godfrey's Schnapps to its portfolio of premium spirits.

The Southampton-based distributor aims to focus on developing the

brand "as a key player in the specialist drinks market", according to a spokesman.

Godfrey's Schnapps is available in seven variants - original flavours peach and apple, and newcomers butterscotch, vanilla, banana, cherry and chocolate spice.

Managing director Rob Preston said: "We are delighted to be working with Godfrey's as we feel it has enormous growth potential due to

its superior quality and versatility as a drink."

Godfrey's Schnapps is based on

an 80-year-ol d family recipe which is said to take its inspiration from the tradition

of wine making and fruit distillation originating from the Valencia region

of Spain.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
