Virgin vouchers slammed

Complaints about money-off leaflets for Virgin Wines have been upheld by the ASA. The leaflets, distributed with goods purchased from Amazon and Lovefilm, offered customers £40 off cases of wine. Complainants said it wasn't clear that it was necessary to become a member of the Virgin WineBank and make a monthly payment to claim the discount.

Wild Pelican launched in UK

Canned wine brand Wild Pelican is being launched in the UK by Bottle Green. The range, produced by Vinovation, comes in : red, white and rosé, selected from Spain, South Africa and the Languedoc respectively. Adam Marshall, commercial director for Bottle Green, said: "There has been a shift towards non-traditional packages for wine, such as bag-in-box, pouches and Tetra Pak cartons. We are delighted to be working with such a young, vibrant team as Vinovation in bringing another of these innovative packs to the UK market."

Eisberg devises strategy

Chalié Richards has announced its 2009 marketing plans for alcohol-free Eisberg, which has a range of four still and two sparkling wines, all with just 0.5% abv and priced £2.99-£3.99. The agency has put some £100,000 behind the brand - a massive increase on its spend last year - and is targeting pregnant women, designated drivers and health-conscious consumers .

BII appoints new chief

The BII has appointed Neil Robertson as chief executive. Robertson, who has more than 12 years' senior management experience across the public and private sectors, will be joining the BII in January next year.

Christmas spending

Consumers are planning to spend 7% less than they did last Christmas on gifts, socialising, and food and drink , according to a survey by Deloitte. On average, consumers predict a budget of £655. In spite of the current economic turmoil,

57% of UK consumers

intend to spend the same this Christmas as they did last year, while 24% of respondents say they will spend less and 19% say they will spend more.

New store for JW Lees

JW Lees has opened a second retail store.

Willoughby's Wine Warehouse in Sale, Greater Manchester, joins the original branch in Frodsham, Cheshire.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
