New chief for Drinkaware Trust

Chris Sorek has been appointed as chief executive of the Drinkaware Trust, the independent body that provides information on responsible drinking.

Sorek has more than 25 years experience in communications, public affairs and community relations, most recently with the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development.

His has also worked for ad agencies Ogilvy & Mather and Cohn & Wolfe, Unisys, and the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies.

Sorek said: “Alcohol culture in the UK is the defining issue of our time. At Drinkaware we have a mission to enable individuals and communities to make informed decisions about their drinking from a position of knowledge and to help transform society. It’s my aim to take Drinkaware messages to everyone that needs to know.”

Drinkaware Trust chairman Derek Lewis said Sorek was “uniquely qualified to realise the full potential of the trust”.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
