Second store for WoodWinters

15 December, 2008

Wine and whisky merchant WoodWinters is opening its second shop this week. The new Edinburgh branch will be joined by new stores in Glasgow and Perth in the New Year, according to a report in the Scotsman.

Former Valvona & Crolla wine buyer John Ritchie has joined the team, which was set up three years ago in Bridge of Allan by husband and wife Cara Winters and Douglas Wood.

Wood said: “The blend of our business model, which is one-third wholesale, one-third retail and one-third private clients, has worked really well and we thought that formula would fit Edinburgh.”

The company is also revamping its website as its expansion plans take shape.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
