Tourism spreads word on SA

12 December, 2008

An increase in British visitors to South Africa is boosting

sales of

the country's wines in the UK, according to research from

SA Wines Online and London-based TV channel Southern Africa Direct.

SA Wines Online, which specialises in selling South African wine to the UK , found that

most of its customers have either visited the country or have friends or family there.

"When we first set up the business in 2001, we were targeting South African expats," said founder Kevin Gallagher. "But recent research has shown that 80% of our customers are in fact British and most of them have been to the Cape's

winelands."

More than half a million British tourists visit South Africa each year, with the Cape Wine Route, Cape Town and the Garden Route being the three most popular destinations.

The UK remains South Africa's largest wine export destination, with Wines of South Africa enjoying 13% value and volume growth in the year to Aug 9, according to Nielsen.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
