New home for Red Zebra

12 December, 2008

Derby wine merchant Red Zebra has ended a brief period of homelessness by securing new premises in the city's Cathedral Quarter.

The wine retailer recently pulled out of Derby's Westfield Shopping Centre, having already closed its Guildhall premises, and had been hoping to move into its new shop before Christmas. In the meantime the business had kept going through its wholesaling interests.

The opening was celebrated with a candlelit port tasting in the cellar, which was so well supported that owner David Simmonds said he would have to restrict numbers at forthcoming tasting events.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
