Independent expands with second shop

05 January, 2009

Independent wine merchant Essentially Wine has opened a second shop in Richmond upon Thames.

Located near Richmond railway station and Kew Gardens, the shop covers two floors and is double the size of the original Chipstead store. A tasting room on the lower floor will be available for private functions and wine tasting events.

Established in 2004, Essentially Wine specialises in estate-bottled fine wine from small and unusual vineyards. It also sells wine accessories, glasses, and cellars.

The expansion follows the launch of essentiallywine.com last June.

Founding director Stephen Forward said: “This project has taken a year to plan and execute, and I am delighted with the results. The support we’ve received from the local community since opening has been overwhelming.

"I am passionate about supporting the smaller wine producer and vineyard and hope to inspire people to buy wine in a more bespoke, informative and personal environment.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
