MPs congratulate trade on Challenge 25 launch

16 January, 2009

MPs have congratulated the off-trade on the launch of the Challenge 25 initiative in an Early Day Motion.

The EDM was tabled by Tory MP Philip Davies, who has asked fellow members to praise the trade for its "continued commitment to tackling under-age sales".

The motion adds that the House of Commons "believes that by challenging customers that cashiers suspect are under 25 years to prove their age, the retail sector will further drive a cultural change amongst young people who will expect to have to prove their age should they wish to buy alcohol from the off-trade".

It adds that the House "is delighted to see retailers taking such a responsible and proactive stance on under-age sales, and encourages the wide usage of this initiative".

On Friday afternoon the EDM had been signed by 15 MPs.

Agreeing to disagree

Disagreeing about wine is a fact of wine-trade life, like drugs in sport or corruption in politics. Because taste is entirely subjective, debates about our personal preferences are as inevitable as they are interminable. Indeed, these long-winded, wine-fuelled arguments are precisely what make our jobs so much fun.
