Vergelegen moves to PLB

25 February, 2009

PLB is to take over the UK agency for the highly-rated South African wine producer Vergelegen on April 1.

The deal covers the whole Vergelegen portfolio, from the premium range which carries an rrp of £8 to Vergelegen V at £60.

PLB Managing director Peter Darbyshire said: “South Africa is performing very well in the UK as it is the fastest growing top 10 country by volume and value, and we see this appointment as a great opportunity.”

Vergelegen is currently handled by Paragon Vintners.

Darbyshire added: “Paragon has done a great job, and we look forward to taking the brand to the next phase of its development.

“The wines are complementary to our portfolio, giving us a strong, premium South African proposition to offer customers.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
