Black lager joins Brewdog line-up

26 February, 2009

Scottish microbrewer Brewdog is launching what it claims will be the first mass-market UK-made black lager.

Zeitgeist is a 4.9% abv taking its inspiration from classic Czech dark lagers.

It is made with a lager yeast and a mix of Cascade and Ahtanum hops, and will be available in 33cl bottles for the off-trade.

Brewdog managing director James Watt says the beer was a throwback to how lager used to appear before the advent of pale malting led to golden pilsner beers.

He said: “Its inspiration is found more than 200 years ago. It takes an age-old classic, a forgotten masterpiece and gives it relevance and an avant-garde edge.”

Art student and label designer Heather Brennan said the look of the packaging had been inspired by an “interest in military line-ups and the repressing of their identity in masks and uniform.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
