Adnams reports dip in profits

Adnams has seen its profits dented by the pound's weakness against the euro. The brewer and wine merchant


also been hit by the on-trade's 9.3 % decline in beer sales

. Operating profits were 1.5 million in the 2008 financial and calendar year, down from 4.2 million in 2007.

IWC welcomes new entrants

Holland and Russia are among newcomers to the International Wine Challenge, in which judging starts on April 14. More than 9,000 wines from 41 countries have entered the contest

and there has been a 20% surge in sake entries from Japan. Tim Atkin MW, Sam Harrop MW, Charles Metcalfe, Derek Smedley MW and this year's guest co-chairman Joshua Greene, editor of US magazine Wine & Spirits, will lead the expert panels of more than 400 judges in the competition.

A first for Skalli

Skalli is launching what it says is the first premium brand to incorporate wines from different regions across the south of France. Famille Skalli will be priced from 7.99-9.99, including four single varietal vins de pays and six AOC wines. Off-trade brand manager Marc Besson said: "The share of branded volume in the French category is decreasing, partly because AOCs have yet to evolve to become more consumer-friendly and the New World is taking ground from vins de pays. "

Campari buys Wild Turkey

Campari is to buy the Wild Turkey Bourbon brand and related businesses from Pernod Ricard for US$575 million, as part of Pernod Ricard's disposal of assets after buying Absolut last year.

The deal includes distillery facilities in Kentucky, a bulk aged-bourbon inventory and the American Honey liqueur brand. The deal is expected to be completed by June 30.

Cobra joins forces with 118 118
