Tirado and Ortega to speak at LIWF Wines of Chile seminar

27 March, 2009

Rafael Tirado, chief winemaker of Via Wines, and José Manuel Ortega, founder of Bodegas O Fournier, are to speak at

a Wines of Chile seminar on the Magic

of Maule at the London

International Wine

Fair.

Maule has more than 30,000ha of vineyards - nearly a third of Chile's production - including some of the country's oldest ungrafted vines. According to Wines of Chile, it is the forgotten hero of Chile's viticultural heritage.

Tirado has more than 500ha of vineyards in Maule, including an organically farmed estate at San Rafael, and Ortega has

recently started making wines from old, ungrafted vines of Cabernet, Merlot and Carignan.

Wines of Chile's UK director Michael Cox said: " Chile's diversity never ceases to amaze me. Even in traditional regions , one can find innovation and fresh attitudes to winemaking. The two speakers will illustrate the magic of modern Maule - old vines, new wines."

The seminar will take place from 12.15-1.15pm on May 12 in the seminar theatre of the LIWF. To register contact info@winesofchile.org.uk or call

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
