Guinness 250th toast on TV

A TV ad produced to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the lease on the Guinness brewery in Dublin will be shown in the UK from Sept 1.

The ad is part of the first ever global advertising for the Diageo-owned brand.

The edit shown in the UK will see a toast to “Arthur” [Guinness, the brewery’s founder] mutate to “farmers”, “llamas” and “parsnips” as it travels from person to person around the globe.

There will also be a worldwide promotion with a top prize of a trip into space courtesy of Guinness and Virgin Galactic.

The celebrations peak on Sept 24 with a series of Arthur’s Day events in major cities including Dublin and New York.

Global marketing manager Ronan Beirne said: “Guinness is one of the world’s most iconic brands and we feel it is a fitting tribute to use this milestone to launch our first ever global ad campaign.”

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
