Tesco wine fairs target 10,000 consumers

21 July, 2009

Tesco is hoping to attract over 10,000 customers to this year's wine fairs, which take place in four UK cities this autumn.

The events will be held in Manchester, Edinburgh, London and Bristol and will be open to Tesco Wine Club members. Entry is £10.

Each event features 250 wines and a programme of free workshops. Those who attend can receive a discount on orders placed on the day.

Nick Juby, product development manager for Tesco.com, said: “The fairs are a great place to visit and taste a huge selection of wines, from old favourites to new discoveries.

"No other supermarket offers such a great chance to discover and taste wines which not only offers the chance for people to learn from industry insiders, but also allows us to communicate face to face with our customers.”

Tesco began its fair programme in 2003 with an event at Vinopolis in London for 500 people.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
