Berry Bros & Rudd was named Wine Merchant of the Year and Direct Merchant of the Year at last night's International Wine Challenge presentation.

Majestic was named High Street Chain of the Year, with Marks & Spencer named Supermarket of the Year.

Tesco picked up the prize for best wine club, in front of a full house at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. The Corporate Social Responsibility Award was won by The Co-operative.

Oz Clarke and James May were named Personalities of the Year, with Peter Lehmann honoured with a Lifetime Achievement prize.

Hosts Charles Metcalfe and Tim Atkin MW revealed the Champion Trophy Winners, Merchants of the Year and Winemakers of the Year Awards at the ceremony, the 26th in the competition’s history.

The evening was the culmination of a year of planning and judging by over 300 experts from 19 countries. Every medal-winning wine was blind tasted at least three times and sometimes as many as six.

IWC director Andrew Reed said: “The IWC awards dinner is a celebration of excellence and reflects the outstanding success of this year’s Challenge. In a year when the standard is even higher than usual, these winners are the best of the best from the wine world.”
