61 stores closed in Wine Cellar administration

Wine Cellar has been placed into administration with the closure of 61 stores and the loss of 320 jobs.

A package of 109 stores has been sold to West Midlands-based EFB Retail.

Bill Dawson, partner in the reorganisation service at administrator Deloitte, said the sale would secure around 640 jobs in the stores and 60 in the company’s head office.

Dawson added: “The administrators are not in a position to continue trading the remaining 61 stores which have not been sold.

“These stores have been closed and unfortunately around 320 employees have been made redundant.

“We will be working with the Redundancy Payments Office to provide support for these staff.

“The company has undertaken an extensive search to find and investor or buyer.

“It has become necessary to sell the business via an administration, due to its financial position.”

Wine Cellar operates under the Booze Buster, Simply Drinks and Simply Food & Drinks fascias.

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards.
