Thorpe joins Negociants from Constellation

02 December, 2009

Simon Thorpe MW has joined Yalumba supplier Negociants UK as managing director, a month after leaving Constellation Europe.

Thorpe, one of the best known figures in the UK wine trade, was Constellation’s vice president for premium wine and wine development. Before that he was purchasing director at Western Wines and he is also a former Waitrose buyer.

He described Negociants as “a business that represents wineries which encapsulate all that is great about the Australian wine industry”.

He added: “I hope to use my experience in different sectors of the wine industry to drive Negociants and the wines it represents towards a very bright future in the UK marketplace.”

Negociants international director Brenton Fry said: “This appointment will add increased depth and vision to our sales and marketing team and enable us to maximise our portfolio across all channels.”

Thorpe will assume overall responsibility for the Negociants UK team from December 14.

Agreeing to disagree

Disagreeing about wine is a fact of wine-trade life, like drugs in sport or corruption in politics. Because taste is entirely subjective, debates about our personal preferences are as inevitable as they are interminable. Indeed, these long-winded, wine-fuelled arguments are precisely what make our jobs so much fun.
