Chance to win £1k in Rioja wine

19 February, 2010

Off Licence News has teamed up with Wines of Rioja for a major initiative aimed at the independent sector. As part of a drive to help retailers capitalise on sales of the region’s wines, we’ll be inviting readers to run a promotional weekend in store during October. The retailer showing the most flair will then win £1,000 towards their its shipment of wine from Rioja.

Ahead of the promotion, details of which will appear in OLN in August, we are offering 20 independents the chance to visit Rioja on a three-day trip.

Taking place from April 19 to 21, the educational buying trip will combine seminars with bodega visits and tastings. To apply for a place, please contact Priya Kotecha, Phipps PR, 17 Exeter Street, London, WC2E 7DU or rioja@phippspr.co.uk. The closing date for entries is March 10.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
