Bordeaux 2009 vintage ‘will be dear’

19 February, 2010

Early indications suggest the 2009 Bordeaux vintage could be “spectacular”, according to Berry Bros & Rudd, whose sales director Simon Staples has had exclusive access to some of the wines.

Staples and Berry’s Bordeaux buyer Max Lalondrelle tasted some “brilliant” finished wines and barrel samples?. They will declare their final verdict at the main en primeur tastings next month.

Staples said it was already clear that 2009 wouldn’t be a cheap vintage.

“The market dictates what prices the wines sell for and with an ever-increasing demand, especially from Asia, Bordeaux 2009 won’t be cheap,” he said.

“What we have tried so far are all superb, rich, powerful, sexy beasts with great structure, depth and almost magical promise.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
