Baron encourages trials of Bordeaux

Bordeaux wine firm Producta is launching new umbrella brand Baron de Bordeaux to showcase the region’s wines.

The brand aims to encourage consumers to experiment with lesser-known Bordeaux appellations.

It will be marketed in the UK by Producta’s agent Thierry’s and makes its debut at the France Under One Roof tasting in London next month.

The range will include a red from the new Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, plus AOC Bordeaux wines including a Sauvignon Blanc variety, and wines from Médoc and Lussac St Emilion.

Prices will range from £6.99 to £13.99.

Export manager Alexis Fourault said: “We did a lot?of benchmarking and came to the conclusion we were in a perfect position to take advantage of a major gap in the UK market.”?

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
