Wakefield? boasts carbon? neutral first

Clare Valley producer Wakefield Wines has claimed its Eighty Acres range is the first in the world to become completely carbon neutral.

The neutral status is based on a

ife cycle assessment model, which measures emissions at every step in the life of the wine, from the vineyard to bottle. The RMIT University in Melbourne independently audits and approves the model.

The LCA approach allows Wakefield to accurately measure its carbon footprint and take steps to reduce emissions prior to off-setting the balance through a range of domestic projects.

“Wakefield Wines is a family-owned company operating in both rural and urban environments,” said Mitchell Taylor, Wakefield Wines’ managing director and winemaker.

“This direct link with the land, along with the long-term view we hold for our business development, results in a commitment to operating in a manner that eliminates any negative impact on the environment.”?Wakefield has appointed Clinton Taylor as its environmental ambassador to oversee the 100% carbon neutral programme, as well as to champion the company’s broader environmental initiatives.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
