Bud joins 4% abv lager fray

Budweiser is the latest premium lager to launch a 4% abv spin-off.

The new product, dubbed Bud 66, will appear in August and joins a growing market in which stablemates Beck’s Vier and Stella Artois 4% have already established sound footholds.

Anheuser-Busch InBev UK President Stuart MacFarlane said: “Bud 66 is the result of extensive research and testing to create a product that will resonate with consumers. It is an ultra refreshing beer specifically developed to appeal to consumers in their early twenties.”

He described the beer as “lightly carbonated with a touch of sweetness”, adding: “We named it Budweiser Brew No 66 after the winning recipe number that had the perfect balance of ingredients creating the taste we know consumers will love.”

He added: “The opportunity for innovation in beer is huge: consumers, and in particular consumers in their early twenties are looking for something new and different – and it’s up to us to continue providing compelling product offers that reflect their needs and tastes.”

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
