Draycott lands supplier’s top sales job

A former head of wine buying at First Quench has been named sales director of González Byass UK.

Melissa Draycott joined the sherry-led business in December in a sales consultancy role.

She was head of wine buying at First Quench from February 2009 until the company’s collapse in October.

Prior to that she was a senior wine buyer with Sainsbury’s.

Draycott said: “This new role is a great challenge and one which I will relish. The company is highly respected and successful, with a clear direction.”?Martin Skelton, managing director of González Byass UK, said: “Melissa has a wealth of experience and joins us at an exciting time for our business, as we expand both our Spanish wine portfolio and add agency business, such as Jackson Estate and Quinta do Noval.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
