l Intercontinental Brands has extended its aniseed liqueur brand Sambuxo with the addition of three new flavours. Black, Cherry and Blackcurrant will be available in 70cl bottles with an abv of 38%.

This summer all five flavours of Cactus Jack’s schnapps will be available in 75cl bottles, but at the price of the normal 50cl bottle. The 50% extra free offer will be flagged up on the label above the brand name.

Cockspur rum is entering the third year of its sponsorship deal as the official spirit of English test match grounds. Global brand director David Smith hailed the cricket link-up as “phenomenally successful” and said it has helped raise the profile of the brand in the UK by introducing the rum to “thousands of cricket fans”.

The Wemyss family – owner of independent malt whisky bottler Wemyss Malts – has launched a small-batch gin called Darnley’s View, which celebrates the meeting of Mary Queen of Scots and her husband Lord Darnley at Wemyss Castle in 1565. The gin is distilled five times in the London dry style, according to a family recipe using six botanicals including elderflower.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
