l Bibendum has strengthened its digestif portfolio with the signing of four exclusive agencies from Cognac and Armagnac. The new arrivals are Samalens Armagnac, Larressingle Armagnac, Cognac Pierre Ferrand and Landy Cognac and include the oldest vintage-dated Cognac currently available on the commercial market – Pierre Ferrand 1914.

Armagnac’s generic body, the BNIA, is hosting a tasting and masterclass presented by spirits expert Ian Wisniewski in London on April 12 at the Connaught Hotel. To register go to armagnac.fr.

Rémy Martin is rolling out its ultra-premium Louis XIII Rare Cask 43.8 in the UK with a price tag of £11,250.

Anthony Habert, senior brand manager at First Drinks, said: “Trading up is still alive and well for consumers looking to move up from mainstream Cognacs to premium offerings.”

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
