More buy Fairtrade wine

The economic downturn hasn’t put customers off buying Fairtrade wine, according to new figures.

Estimated volumes have increased by 89% over the past year, the Fairtrade Foundation said. Value sales have grown from just under £10 million in 2008 to £16.4 million last year.

But Fairtrade beer has seen a decline in sales from £1.8 million to £1.6 million.

The figures were released to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight, which will finish on Sunday (March 7).

“Last year was a tough one for everyone, but a desperate year for many poor communities and small farmers in developing countries,” said Harriet Lamb, chief executive of the Fairtrade Foundation.

“Despite the recession, the public are still voting with their wallets for fairness and want to change the indignities of an unjust trading system.” ?Virgin Wines is supporting a project to fund a new computer centre and library at a primary school in South Africa.

The Fairhills Project was set up in 2005 as a joint venture between Du Toitskloof winery and exporter Origin Wine, and Virgin Wines is the exclusive retailer of the winery’s Usizo range.
