Australia tastings push

Australia’s First Families of Wine has held tastings and masterclasses for independent retailers and consumers in the UK in a bid to raise its profile.

The group was set up to showcase examples of varietal and regional wines and comprises 12 family-run wineries: Brown Brothers, Campbells, d’Arenberg, De Bortoli, Henschke, Howard Park, Jim Barry, McWilliam’s, Tahbilk, Wakefield, Tyrrell’s and Yalumba.

Yalumba’s Robert Hill Smith told OLN: “It’s about provenance, regionality and diversity and we’re trying to build a voice around those messages. It’s a collaborative approach and is totally quality-driven – we hope to bring life to what we do on a daily basis to consumers.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
